Hymn 3 — Praṇayaprasādākhyaṁ tṛtīyaṁ stotram

सदसत्त्वेन भावानां युक्ता या द्वितयी गतिः।
Sadasattvena bhāvānāṁ yuktā yā dvitayī gatiḥ|
तामुल्लङ्घ्य तृतीयस्मै नमश्चित्राय शम्भवे॥३.१॥
Tāmullaṅghya tṛtīyasmai namaścitrāya śambhave||3.1||

The twofold (dvitayī) path (gatiḥ), which () is ascribed (yuktā) to things (bhāvānām) through being and non-being (sat-asattvena), — having transcended (ullaṅghya) it (tām), homage (namaḥ) to the third (tṛtīyasmai), the wondrous (citrāya) Śambhu (śambhave)||3.1||


आसुरर्षिजनादस्मिन्नस्वतन्त्रे जगत्त्रये।
Āsurarṣijanādasminnasvatantre jagattraye|
स्वतन्त्रास्ते स्वतन्त्रस्य ये तवैवानुजीविनः॥३.२॥
Svatantrāste svatantrasya ye tavaivānujīvinaḥ||3.2||

In this (asmin) triple world (jagat-traye), unfree (asvatantre) up to the asuras and sages (ā-sura-ṛṣi-janāt), free (svatantrāḥ) are those (te), who (ye) live by Thee alone (tava eva anujīvinaḥ), of the free (svatantrasya)||3.2||


अशेषविश्वखचितभवद्वपुरनुस्मृतिः।
Aśeṣaviśvakhacitabhavadvapuranusmṛtiḥ|
येषां भवरुजामेकं भेषजं ते सुखासिनः॥३.३॥
Yeṣāṁ bhavarujāmekaṁ bheṣajaṁ te sukhāsinaḥ||3.3||

Those (te) rejoice (sukha-āsinaḥ), for whom (yeṣām) the remembrance of Your body, adorned with the entire universe (aśeṣa-viśva-khacita-bhavat-vapuḥ-anusmṛtiḥ)the sole (ekam) medicine (bheṣajam) for the disease of existence (bhava-rujām)||3.3||


सितातपत्रं यस्येन्दुः स्वप्रभापरिपूरितः।
Sitātapatraṁ yasyenduḥ svaprabhāparipūritaḥ|
चामरं स्वर्धुनीस्रोतः स एकः परमेश्वरः॥३.४॥
Cāmaraṁ svardhunīsrotaḥ sa ekaḥ parameśvaraḥ||3.4||

He (saḥ) alone (ekaḥ) is the Supreme Lord (parama-īśvaraḥ), whose (yasya) white umbrella (sita-ātapatram)the moon (induḥ), filled with His own light (sva-prabhā-paripūritaḥ), and the fan (cāmaram)the stream of the heavenly river (svardhunī-srotaḥ)||3.4||


प्रकाशां शीतलामेकां शुद्धां शशिकलामिव।
Prakāśāṁ śītalāmekāṁ śuddhāṁ śaśikalāmiva|
दृशं वितर मे नाथ कामप्यमृतवाहिनीम्॥३.५॥
Dṛśaṁ vitara me nātha kāmapyamṛtavāhinīm||3.5||

O Lord (nātha), grant (vitara) me (me) some (kām api) vision (dṛśam), bearing nectar (amṛta-vāhinīm), — luminous (prakāśām), cool (śītalām), single (ekām), pure (śuddhām), like a crescent moon (śaśi-kalām iva)||3.5||


त्वच्चिदानन्दजलधेश्च्युताः संवित्तिविप्रुषः।
Tvaccidānandajaladheścyutāḥ saṁvittivipruṣaḥ|
इमाः कथं मे भगवन्नामृतास्वादसुन्दराः॥३.६॥
Imāḥ kathaṁ me bhagavannāmṛtāsvādasundarāḥ||3.6||

Lord (bhagavan), how indeed (katham) these (imāḥ) sprays of consciousness (saṁvitti-vipruṣaḥ), fallen off (cyutāḥ) from Your ocean of Consciousness-Bliss (tvat-cit-ānanda-jaladheḥ), are not (na) beautiful to me (me… sundarāḥ) in the taste of nectar (amṛta-āsvāda)?||3.6||


त्वयि रागरसे नाथ न मग्नं हृदयं प्रभो।
Tvayi rāgarase nātha na magnaṁ hṛdayaṁ prabho|
येषामहृदया एव तेऽवज्ञस्पदमीदृशाः॥३.७॥
Yeṣāmahṛdayā eva te'vajñaspadamīdṛśāḥ||3.7||

The Lord (nātha), the Master (prabho), those whose (yeṣām) heart (hṛdayam) is not (na) immersed (magnam) in You (tvayi), in the juice of love (rāga-rase), — those (te) indeed (eva) are heartless (ahṛdayāḥ), and such (īdṛśāḥ) are worthy of contempt (avajñā-aspadam)||3.7||


प्रभुणा भवता यस्य जातं हृदयमेलनम्।
Prabhuṇā bhavatā yasya jātaṁ hṛdayamelanam|
प्राभवीणां विभूतीनां परमेकः स भाजनम्॥३.८॥
Prābhavīṇāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ paramekaḥ sa bhājanam||3.8||

He in whom (yasya) has occurred (jātam) the meeting of the heart (hṛdaya-melanam) with Thee (bhavatā), the Lord (prabhuṇā), — that one (saḥ) alone (ekaḥ) is the highest (param) vessel (bhājanam) of the lordly perfections (prābhavīṇām vibhūtīnām)||3.8||


हर्षाणामथ शोकानां सर्वेषां प्लावकः समम्।
Harṣāṇāmatha śokānāṁ sarveṣāṁ plāvakaḥ samam|
भवद्ध्यानामृतापूरो निम्नाणिम्नभुवामिव॥३.९॥
Bhavaddhyānāmṛtāpūro nimnāṇimnabhuvāmiva||3.9||

The flood of nectar from contemplating You (bhavat-dhyāna-amṛta-āpūraḥ) equally (samam) floods (plāvakaḥ) all (sarveṣām) joys (harṣāṇām) and (atha) sorrows (śokānām)like (iva) lowlands and higher places (nimna-animna-bhuvām)||3.9||


केव न स्याद्दृशा तेषां सुखसम्भारनिर्भरा।
Keva na syāddṛśā teṣāṁ sukhasambhāranirbharā|
येषामात्माधिकेनेश न क्वापि विरहस्त्वया॥३.१०॥
Yeṣāmātmādhikeneśa na kvāpi virahastvayā||3.10||

Lord (īśa), what indeed (kā eva) vision (dṛśā) not (na) will be (syāt) for those (teṣām) full with a breast of happiness (sukha-sambhāra-nirbharā), for whom (yeṣām) nowhere (na kvāpi) is there separation (virahaḥ) from You (tvayā), who is dearer than one’s own self (ātma-adhikena)?||3.10||


गर्जामि बत नृत्यामि पूर्णा मम मनोरथाः।
Garjāmi bata nṛtyāmi pūrṇā mama manorathāḥ|
स्वामी ममैष घटितो यत्त्वमत्यन्तरोचनः॥३.११॥
Svāmī mamaiṣa ghaṭito yattvamatyantarocanaḥ||3.11||

I roar (garjāmi)ah! (bata)I dance (nṛtyāmi), full (pūrṇāḥ) my (mama) desires (manaḥ-rathāḥ): for (yat) Thou (tvam), shining immeasurably (atyanta-rocanaḥ), hast become (ghaṭitaḥ) this very (eṣaḥ) my (mama) Lord (svāmī)||3.11||


नान्यद्वेद्यं क्रिया यत्र नान्यो योगो विदा च यत्।
Nānyadvedyaṁ kriyā yatra nānyo yogo vidā ca yat|
ज्ञानं स्यात्किं तु विश्वैकपूर्णा चित्त्वं विजृम्भते॥३.१२॥
Jñānaṁ syātkiṁ tu viśvaikapūrṇā cittvaṁ vijṛmbhate||3.12||

Where (yatra) action (kriyā)not (na) another knowable (na anyat vedyaṁ), and (ca) union (yogaḥ)not (na) another (anyaḥ), than the knower himself (vidā), — what (kim) there (yat) would be (syāt) knowledge (jñānam)? But (tu) Consciousness (cit-tvam), full of the universe as one (viśva-eka-pūrṇā), unfolds (vijṛmbhate) — the stanza is obscure: “kiṁ tu” is read both as “but” and as “what then” —||3.12||


दुर्जयानामनन्तानां दुःखानां सहसैव ते।
Durjayānāmanantānāṁ duḥkhānāṁ sahasaiva te|
हस्तात्पलायिता येषां वाचि शश्वच्छिवध्वनिः॥३.१३॥
Hastātpalāyitā yeṣāṁ vāci śaśvacchivadhvaniḥ||3.13||

From the hand (hastāt) of countless (anantānām) sufferings (duḥkhānām), which cannot be overcome (durjayānām), immediately (sahasā eva) fled (palāyitāḥ) those (te), in whose (yeṣām) speech (vāci) constantly (śaśvat) sounds Śiva (śiva-dhvaniḥ)||3.13||


उत्तमः पुरुषोऽन्योऽस्ति युष्मच्छेषविशेषितः।
Uttamaḥ puruṣo'nyo'sti yuṣmaccheṣaviśeṣitaḥ|
त्वं महापुरुषस्त्वेको निःशेषपुरुषाश्रयः॥३.१४॥
Tvaṁ mahāpuruṣastveko niḥśeṣapuruṣāśrayaḥ||3.14||

There is (asti) and another (anyaḥ) highest (uttamaḥ) puruṣa (puruṣaḥ), distinguished by being the remainder of You (yuṣmat-śeṣa-viśeṣitaḥ). But You (tvaṁ tu)the Great Puruṣa (mahā-puruṣaḥ), one (ekaḥ), the support of all puruṣas without remainder (niḥśeṣa-puruṣa-āśrayaḥ)||3.14||


जयन्ति ते जगद्वन्द्या दासास्ते जगतां विभो।
Jayanti te jagadvandyā dāsāste jagatāṁ vibho|
संसारार्णव एवैष येषां क्रीडामहासरः॥३.१५॥
Saṁsārārṇava evaiṣa yeṣāṁ krīḍāmahāsaraḥ||3.15||

O All-pervading (vibho), may victory be theirs (jayanti) those (te) Thy servants (dāsāḥ te), to whom the world bows (jagat-vandyāḥ), — those for whom (yeṣām) indeed (eva) this (eṣaḥ) ocean of saṁsāra (saṁsāra-arṇavaḥ) is a great pond for play (krīḍā-mahā-saraḥ)||3.15||


आसतां तावदन्यानि दैन्यानीह भवज्जुषाम्।
Āsatāṁ tāvadanyāni dainyānīha bhavajjuṣām|
त्वमेव प्रकटीभूया इत्यनेनैव लज्ज्यते॥३.१६॥
Tvameva prakaṭībhūyā ityanenaiva lajjyate||3.16||

Let the (āsatām tāvat) other (anyāni) humiliations (dainyāni) of those devoted to You (bhavat-juṣām), remain here (iha), — but already from this alone (anenaiva) one is ashamed (lajjyate): «Appear then (prakaṭī-bhūyāḥ) Thou Thyself (tvameva)»||3.16||


मत्परं नास्ति तत्रापि जापकोऽस्मि तदैक्यतः।
Matparaṁ nāsti tatrāpi jāpako'smi tadaikyataḥ|
तत्त्वेन जप इत्यक्षमालया दिशसि क्वचित्॥३.१७॥
Tattvena japa ityakṣamālayā diśasi kvacit||3.17||

“There is (nāsti) nothing (tatrāpi) higher than me (mat-param); I am (asmi) the whisperer (jāpakaḥ)from unity with That (tad-aikyataḥ). Whisper (japa) according to truth (tattvena)” — thus (iti) You sometimes (kvacit) point (diśasi) with a rosary (akṣa-mālayā)||3.17||


सतोऽवश्यं परमसत्सच्च तस्मात्परं प्रभो।
Sato'vaśyaṁ paramasatsacca tasmātparaṁ prabho|
त्वं चासतः सतश्चान्यस्तेनासि सदसन्मयः॥३.१८॥
Tvaṁ cāsataḥ sataścānyastenāsi sadasanmayaḥ||3.18||

Above (param) of being (sataḥ) necessarily (avaśyam) non-being (asat), and (ca) being (sat) above (param) it (tasmāt), Lord (prabho). But You (tvaṁ ca) other (anyaḥ), than non-being (asataḥ) and (ca) than being (sataḥ), — thereby (tena) You (asi) consist of being and non-being (sat-asat-mayaḥ)||3.18||


सहस्रसूर्यकिरणाधिकशुद्धप्रकाशवान्।
Sahasrasūryakiraṇādhikaśuddhaprakāśavān|
अपि त्वं सर्वभुवनव्यापकोऽपि न दृश्यसे॥३.१९॥
Api tvaṁ sarvabhuvanavyāpako'pi na dṛśyase||3.19||

Though (api) you (tvam) possess pure light brighter than a thousand solar rays (sahasra-sūrya-kiraṇa-adhika-śuddha-prakāśavān), though (api) you pervade all worlds (sarva-bhuvana-vyāpakaḥ), — you are not (na) seen (dṛśyase)||3.19||


जडे जगति चिद्रूपः किल वेद्येऽपि वेदकः।
Jaḍe jagati cidrūpaḥ kila vedye'pi vedakaḥ|
विभुर्मिते च येनासि तेन सर्वोत्तमो भवान्॥३.२०॥
Vibhurmite ca yenāsi tena sarvottamo bhavān||3.20||

Therefore (yena) that You (asi)consciousness (cit-rūpaḥ) in the insentient (jaḍe) world (jagati), the knower (vedakaḥ) even (api) in the knowable (vedye), omnipresent (vibhuḥ) in the measured (mite), — thereby (tena) You (bhavān) are above all (sarva-uttamaḥ)||3.20||


अलमाक्रन्दितैरन्यैरियदेव पुरः प्रभोः।
Alamākranditairanyairiyadeva puraḥ prabhoḥ|
तीव्रं विरौमि यन्नाथ मुह्याम्येवं विदन्नपि॥३.२१॥
Tīvraṁ viraumi yannātha muhyāmyevaṁ vidannapi||3.21||

Enough (alam) of other (anyaiḥ) cries (ākranditaiḥ)! Only this (iyadeva) before (puraḥ) the Lord (prabhoḥ) I cry (viraumi) aloud (tīvram): that (yat), Lord (nātha), even knowing (vidannapi) thus (evam), I still lose my mind (muhyāmi)||3.21||
