Hymn 18 — Āviṣkāranāmāṣṭādaśaṁ stotram

जगतोऽन्तरतो भवन्तमाप्त्वा पुनरेतद्भवतोऽन्तराल्लभन्ते।
Jagato'ntarato bhavantamāptvā punaretadbhavato'ntarāllabhante|
जगदीश तवैव भक्तिभाजो न हि तेषामिह दूरतोऽस्ति किञ्चित्॥१८.१॥
Jagadīśa tavaiva bhaktibhājo na hi teṣāmiha dūrato'sti kiñcit||18.1||

Lord of the world (jagat-īśa), having attained (āptvā) You (bhavantam) from within (antarataḥ) of the world (jagataḥ), those who share devotion to You (tava eva bhakti-bhājaḥ) again (punaḥ) obtain (labhante) this (etat) world from within You (bhavataḥ antarāt). For (hi) for them (teṣām) here (iha) there is nothing (na asti kiñcit) far away (dūrataḥ)||18.1||


क्वचिदेव भवान्क्वचिद्भवानी सकलार्थक्रमगर्भिणी प्रधाना।
Kvacideva bhavānkvacidbhavānī sakalārthakramagarbhiṇī pradhānā|
परमार्थपदे तु नैव देव्या भवतो नापि जतत्त्रयस्य भेदः॥१८.२॥
Paramārthapade tu naiva devyā bhavato nāpi jatattrayasya bhedaḥ||18.2||

Somewhere (kvacid eva) — Thou (bhavān), somewhere (kvacid)Bhavānī (bhavānī), the primary (pradhānā), pregnant with the sequence of all things (sakala-artha-krama-garbhiṇī). But (tu) in the state of the highest truth (parama-artha-pade) there is no (na eva) difference (bhedaḥ) neither of the Goddess (devyāḥ), nor (na api) of Thee (bhavataḥ), nor of the three worlds (jagat-trayasya)||18.2||


नो जानते सुभगमप्यवलेपवन्तो लोकाः प्रयत्नसुभगा निखिल हि भावाः।
No jānate subhagamapyavalepavanto lokāḥ prayatnasubhagā nikhila hi bhāvāḥ|
चेतः पुनर्यदिदमुद्यतमप्यवैति नैवात्मरूपमिह हा तदहो हतोऽस्मि॥१८.३॥
Cetaḥ punaryadidamudyatamapyavaiti naivātmarūpamiha hā tadaho hato'smi||18.3||

People (lokāḥ), full of arrogance (avalepavantaḥ), do not (no) know (jānate) and (api) the beautiful (subhagam); for (hi) all (nikhilāḥ) things (bhāvāḥ) are beautiful through effort (prayatna-subhagāḥ). And (punaḥ) the consciousness (cetaḥ), which (yat) here (iha) this (idam) and has arisen (udyatam api), — yet it does not (naiva) recognise (avaiti) its own form (ātma-rūpam). Alas ()! Oh (aho), I am undone (hataḥ asmi)||18.3||


भवन्मयस्वात्मनिवासलब्धसम्पद्भराभ्यर्चितयुष्मदङ्घ्रिः।
Bhavanmayasvātmanivāsalabdhasampadbharābhyarcitayuṣmadaṅghriḥ|
न भोजनाच्छादनमप्यजस्रमपेक्षते यस्तमहं नतोऽस्मि॥१८.४॥
Na bhojanācchādanamapyajasramapekṣate yastamahaṁ nato'smi||18.4||

I bow (nataḥ asmi) before him (tam), who (yaḥ), having honored Your feet with the burden of wealth obtained from life in one’s own self, consisting of You (bhavat-maya-sva-ātma-nivāsa-labdha-sampat-bhara-abhyarcita-yuṣmat-aṅghriḥ), does not (na) need (apekṣate) constantly (ajasram) and (api) in food and clothing (bhojana-ācchādanam)||18.4||


सदा भवद्देहनिवासस्वस्थोऽप्यन्तः परं दह्यत एष लोकः।
Sadā bhavaddehanivāsasvastho'pyantaḥ paraṁ dahyata eṣa lokaḥ|
तवेच्छया तत्कुरु मे यथात्र त्वदर्चनानन्दमयो भवेयम्॥१८.५॥
Tavecchayā tatkuru me yathātra tvadarcanānandamayo bhaveyam||18.5||

This (eṣaḥ) person (lokaḥ), though (api) and always (sadā) established by life in Your body (bhavat-deha-nivāsa-svasthaḥ), inside (antaḥ) only (param) burns (dahyate). By Your will (tava icchayā) make (kuru) for me (me) so (yathā), that (tat) I here (atra) may become (bhaveyam) consisting of the bliss of worshipping You (tvat-arcana-ānanda-mayaḥ)||18.5||


स्वरसोदितयुष्मदङ्घ्रिपद्मद्वयपूजामृतपानसक्तचित्तः।
Svarasoditayuṣmadaṅghripadmadvayapūjāmṛtapānasaktacittaḥ|
सकार्थचयेष्वहं भवेयम्सुखसंस्पर्शनमात्रलोकयात्रः॥१८.६॥
Sakārthacayeṣvahaṁ bhaveyamsukhasaṁsparśanamātralokayātraḥ||18.6||

May I be (bhaveyam), with a mind attached to drinking the nectar of worship of the pair of Your lotus-feet, risen by their own taste (sva-rasa-udita-yuṣmat-aṅghri-padma-dvaya-pūjā-amṛta-pāna-sakta-cittaḥ), such that in all heaps of objects (sakala-artha-cayeṣu) the worldly path is but a touch of happiness (sukha-saṁsparśana-mātra-loka-yātraḥ)||18.6||


सकलव्यवहारगोचरे स्फुटमन्तः स्पुरति त्वयि प्रभो।
Sakalavyavahāragocare sphuṭamantaḥ spurati tvayi prabho|
उपयान्त्यपयान्ति चानिशं मम वस्तूनि विभान्तु सर्वदा॥१८.७॥
Upayāntyapayānti cāniśaṁ mama vastūni vibhāntu sarvadā||18.7||

O Lord (prabho), when You (tvayi) clearly (sphuṭam) shine (sphurati) within (antaḥ), in the domain of all everyday activity (sakala-vyavahāra-gocare), — may my (mama) things (vastūni), which constantly (aniśam) come (upayānti) and (ca) go (apayānti), shine (vibhāntu) always (sarvadā)||18.7||


सततमेव तवैव पुरेऽथवाप्यरहितो विचरेयमहं त्वया।
Satatameva tavaiva pure'thavāpyarahito vicareyamahaṁ tvayā|
क्षणलवोऽप्यथ मा स्म भवेत्स मे न विजये ननु यत्र भवन्मयः॥१८.८॥
Kṣaṇalavo'pyatha mā sma bhavetsa me na vijaye nanu yatra bhavanmayaḥ||18.8||

Yes, I wander. (vicareyam) unceasingly (satatam eva) in Your (tava eva) city (pure) or (athavā api) not separated (arahitaḥ) with You (tvayā). And. (atha) Let it not be. (mā sma bhavet) I have (me) of that (saḥ) a moment or a fraction of a moment (kṣaṇa-lavaḥ api), in which (yatra) I, consisting of You (bhavat-mayaḥ), no (na) would defeat — The second half of the stanza is obscure. — (vijaye)||18.8||


भवदङ्गपरिस्रवत्सुशीतामृतपूरैर्भरिते समन्ततोऽपि।
Bhavadaṅgaparisravatsuśītāmṛtapūrairbharite samantato'pi|
भवदर्चनसम्पदेह भक्तास्तव संसारसरोऽन्तरे चरन्ति॥१८.९॥
Bhavadarcanasampadeha bhaktāstava saṁsārasaro'ntare caranti||18.9||

The devotees (bhaktāḥ) move (caranti) here (iha) within the lake of the cycle of existence (saṁsāra-saraḥ-antare), which by the wealth of worshipping You (bhavat-arcana-sampadā) is filled (bharite) on all sides (samantataḥ api) with streams of the coolest nectar oozing from Your body (bhavat-aṅga-parisravat-su-śīta-amṛta-pūraiḥ)||18.9||


महामन्त्रतरुच्छायाशीतले त्वन्महावने।
Mahāmantratarucchāyāśītale tvanmahāvane|
निजात्मनि सदा नाथ वसेयं तव पूजकः॥१८.१०॥
Nijātmani sadā nātha vaseyaṁ tava pūjakaḥ||18.10||

Lord (nātha), may I live (vaseyam) always (sadā) in my own self (nija-ātmani), in Your great forest (tvat-mahā-vane), cool with the shade of the great mantra tree (mahā-mantra-taru-chāyā-śītale), — Your worshipper (tava pūjakaḥ)||18.10||


प्रतिवस्तु समस्तजीवतः प्रतिभासि प्रतिभामयो यथा।
Prativastu samastajīvataḥ pratibhāsi pratibhāmayo yathā|
मम नाथ तथा पुरः प्रथां व्रज नेत्रत्रयशूलशोभितः॥१८.११॥
Mama nātha tathā puraḥ prathāṁ vraja netratrayaśūlaśobhitaḥ||18.11||

Lord (nātha), as (yathā) You appear (pratibhāsi), consisting of illumination (pratibhā-mayaḥ), in every thing (prati-vastu) to all living beings (samasta-jīvataḥ), — so (tathā) and before me (mama puraḥ) arise (prathām vraja), adorned with three eyes and a trident (netra-traya-śūla-śobhitaḥ)||18.11||


अभिमानचरूपहारतो ममताभक्तिभरेण कल्पितात्।
Abhimānacarūpahārato mamatābhaktibhareṇa kalpitāt|
परितोषगतः कदा भवान्मम सर्वत्र भवेद्दृशः पदम्॥१८.१२॥
Paritoṣagataḥ kadā bhavānmama sarvatra bhaveddṛśaḥ padam||18.12||

When (kadā) You (bhavān), having attained perfect contentment (paritoṣa-gataḥ) from the offering of the dish of pride (abhimāna-caru-upahārataḥ), prepared (kalpitāt) with the burden of devotion and the feeling of “mine” (mamatā-bhakti-bhareṇa), — you will become (bhavet) for me (mama) everywhere (sarvatra) by what the eyes see (dṛśaḥ padam)?||18.12||


निवसन्परमामृताब्धिमध्ये भवदर्चाविधिमात्रमग्नचित्तः।
Nivasanparamāmṛtābdhimadhye bhavadarcāvidhimātramagnacittaḥ|
सकलं जनवृत्तमाचरेयं रसयन्सर्वत एव किञ्चनापि॥१८.१३॥
Sakalaṁ janavṛttamācareyaṁ rasayansarvata eva kiñcanāpi||18.13||

Living (nivasan) in the midst of the ocean of supreme nectar (parama-amṛta-abdhi-madhye), with consciousnessimmersed solely in the rite of worshipping Thee (bhavat-arcā-vidhi-mātra-magna-cittaḥ), — may I perform (ācareyam) all (sakalam) human custom (jana-vṛttam), tasting (rasayan) from everywhere (sarvataḥ eva) something (kiñcana api)||18.13||


भवदीयमिहास्तु वस्तु तत्त्वं विवरीतुं क इवात्र पात्रमर्थे।
Bhavadīyamihāstu vastu tattvaṁ vivarītuṁ ka ivātra pātramarthe|
इदमेव हि नामरूपचेष्टाद्यसमं ते हरते हरोऽसि यस्मात्॥१८.१४॥
Idameva hi nāmarūpaceṣṭādyasamaṁ te harate haro'si yasmāt||18.14||

Who (kaḥ iva) here (atra) is fit (pātram) to reveal (vivarītum) the essence (tattvam) of Your (bhavadīyam) thing (vastu)? For (hi) this (idam eva) — name, form, movement, and so on (nāma-rūpa-ceṣṭā-ādi)You (te) carry away (harate) without remainder (asamam), for (yasmāt) You (asi) are indeed Hara (haraḥ)||18.14||


शान्तये न सुखलिप्सुता मनाग्भक्तिसम्भृतमदेषु तैः प्रभोः।
Śāntaye na sukhalipsutā manāgbhaktisambhṛtamadeṣu taiḥ prabhoḥ|
मोक्षमार्गणफलापि नार्थना स्मर्यते हृदयहारिणः पुरः॥१८.१५॥
Mokṣamārgaṇaphalāpi nārthanā smaryate hṛdayahāriṇaḥ puraḥ||18.15||

In those (taiḥ), in whom (taiḥ) the intoxication of devotion is gathered (bhakti-sambhṛta-madeṣu), not a hair’s breadth (manāk) there is (na) thirst for happiness (sukha-lipsutā) for the sake of peace (śāntaye); and (api) before (puraḥ) the Stealer of the heart (hṛdaya-hāriṇaḥ), the Lord (prabhoḥ), not (na) is remembered (smaryate) even the request (arthanā) with the fruit of seeking liberation (mokṣa-mārgaṇa-phalā)||18.15||


जागरेतरदशाथवा परा यापि काचन मनागवस्थितेः।
Jāgaretaradaśāthavā parā yāpi kācana manāgavasthiteḥ|
भक्तिभाजनजनस्य साखिला त्वत्सनाथमनसो महोत्सवः॥१८.१६॥
Bhaktibhājanajanasya sākhilā tvatsanāthamanaso mahotsavaḥ||18.16||

Wakefulness (jāgarat), another (itarat) state (daśā) or (athavā) any (kā api) other (parā), whatever it may be (yā api) for a brief halt (manāk avasthiteḥ), — all (sā akhilā) this, for a person devoted (bhakti-bhājana-janasya), whose mind has You as its lord (tvat-sanātha-manasaḥ), is a great festival (mahā-utsavaḥ)||18.16||


आमनोऽक्षवलयस्य वृत्तयः सर्वतः शिथिलवृत्तयोऽपि ताः।
Āmano'kṣavalayasya vṛttayaḥ sarvataḥ śithilavṛttayo'pi tāḥ|
त्वामवाप्य दृढदीर्घसंविदो नाथ भक्तिधनसोष्मणां कथम्॥१८.१७॥
Tvāmavāpya dṛḍhadīrghasaṁvido nātha bhaktidhanasoṣmaṇāṁ katham||18.17||

Lord (nātha), how indeed (katham) those (tāḥ) activities (vṛttayaḥ) of the circle of senses up to the mind (ā-manaḥ-akṣa-valayasya), though (api) and from all sides (sarvataḥ) relaxed (śithila-vṛttayaḥ), — in those in whom the heat of the wealth of devotion is fierce (bhakti-dhana-sa-ūṣmaṇām), having obtained (avāpya) Thee (tvām), do they become firm and long-lasting consciousness (dṛḍha-dīrgha-saṁvidaḥ)?||18.17||


न च विभिन्नमसृज्यत किञ्चिदस्त्यथ सुखेतरदत्र न निर्मितम्।
Na ca vibhinnamasṛjyata kiñcidastyatha sukhetaradatra na nirmitam|
अथ च दुःखि च भेदि च सर्वथाप्यसमविस्मयधाम नमोऽस्तु ते॥१८.१८॥
Atha ca duḥkhi ca bhedi ca sarvathāpyasamavismayadhāma namo'stu te||18.18||

Nothing (kiñcid) separate (vibhinnam) was not (na ca) created (asṛjyata), and (atha) nothing other than happiness (sukha-itarat), here (atra) was (na) made (nirmitam). And (atha ca) yet (sarvathā api) there is also the bitter (duḥkhi), and (ca) the divided (bhedi). Homage be (namaḥ astu) to You (te), abode of incomparable wonder (asama-vismaya-dhāma)||18.18||


खरनिषेधखदामृतपूरणोच्छलितधौतविकल्पमलस्य मे।
Kharaniṣedhakhadāmṛtapūraṇocchalitadhautavikalpamalasya me|
दलितदुर्जयसंशयवैरिणस्त्वदवलोकनमस्तु निरन्तरम्॥१८.१९॥
Dalitadurjayasaṁśayavairiṇastvadavalokanamastu nirantaram||18.19||

Let it be. (astu) uninterrupted (nirantaram) my (me) beholding Thee (tvat-avalokanam) — I have, from whom the dirt of discriminating thought, having surfaced, is washed away. from the filling of nectar of sharp negation (khara-niṣedha-khada-amṛta-pūraṇa-ucchalita-dhauta-vikalpa-malasya), I have, who shattered the enemy — an insurmountable doubt (dalita-durjaya-saṁśaya-vairiṇaḥ)||18.19||


स्फुटमविश मामथाविशेयं सततं नाथ भवन्तमस्मि यस्मात्।
Sphuṭamaviśa māmathāviśeyaṁ satataṁ nātha bhavantamasmi yasmāt|
रभसेन वपुस्तवैव साक्षात्परमासत्तिगतः समर्चयेयम्॥१८.२०॥
Rabhasena vapustavaiva sākṣātparamāsattigataḥ samarcayeyam||18.20||

Lord (nātha), clearly (sphuṭam) enter (āviśa) into me (mām)or (atha) may I enter (āviśeyam) I constantly (satatam) into You (bhavantam), — for (yasmāt) I (asmi) swiftly (rabhasena) have come to the highest proximity (parama-āsatti-gataḥ); and may I worship (samarcayeyam) visibly (sākṣāt) Your (tava eva) body (vapuḥ)||18.20||


त्वयि न स्तुतिशक्तिरस्ति कस्याप्यथवास्त्येव यतोऽतिसुन्दरोऽसि।
Tvayi na stutiśaktirasti kasyāpyathavāstyeva yato'tisundaro'si|
सततं पुनरर्थितं ममैतद्यदविश्रान्ति विलोकयेयमीशम्॥१८.२१॥
Satataṁ punararthitaṁ mamaitadyadaviśrānti vilokayeyamīśam||18.21||

No one (kasya api) has (na asti) the power (śaktiḥ) to praise You (tvayi stuti); or (athavā) there is (asti eva) — therefore (yataḥ), that You (asi) are exceedingly beautiful (ati-sundaraḥ). And (punaḥ) the unceasing (satatam) request (arthitam) my (mama) this very one (etat): that (yat) I without respite (aviśrānti) might gaze (vilokayeyam) upon the Lord (īśam)||18.21||
