Hymn 20 — Carvarṇābhidhānaṁ viṁśaṁ stotram

नथं त्रिभुवननाथं भूतिसितं त्रिनयनं त्रिशूलधरम्।
Nathaṁ tribhuvananāthaṁ bhūtisitaṁ trinayanaṁ triśūladharam|
उपवीतीकृतभोगिनमिन्दुकलाशेखरं वन्दे॥२०.१॥
Upavītīkṛtabhoginamindukalāśekharaṁ vande||20.1||

I praise (vande) the Lord (nātham), the Lord of the three worlds (tri-bhuvana-nātham), white from ashes (bhūti-sitam), three-eyed (tri-nayanam), holding a trident (triśūla-dharam), who turned the serpent into a sacred thread (upavītī-kṛta-bhoginam), wearing the crescent moon in his crown (indu-kalā-śekharam)||20.1||


नौमि निजतनुविनिस्मरदंशुकपरिवेषधवलपरिधानम्।
Naumi nijatanuvinismaradaṁśukapariveṣadhavalaparidhānam|
विलसत्कपालमालाकल्पितनृत्तोत्सवाकल्पम्॥२०.२॥
Vilasatkapālamālākalpitanṛttotsavākalpam||20.2||

I praise (naumi) Him whose garment is white with the radiance streaming from His own body (nija-tanu-vinisarat-aṁśuka-pariveṣa-dhavala-paridhānam), Him whose festive attire for the dance is fashioned from a gleaming garland of skulls (vilasat-kapāla-mālā-kalpita-nṛtta-utsava-ākalpam)||20.2||


वन्दे तान्दैवतं येषां हरश्चेष्टा हरोचिताः।
Vande tāndaivataṁ yeṣāṁ haraśceṣṭā harocitāḥ|
हरैकप्रवणाः प्राणाः सदा सौभाग्यसद्मनाम्॥२०.३॥
Haraikapravaṇāḥ prāṇāḥ sadā saubhāgyasadmanām||20.3||

I praise (vande) them (tān) deities (daivatam), whose (yeṣām) deeds (ceṣṭāḥ)Hara (haraḥ) and worthy of Hara (hara-ucitāḥ), and breaths (prāṇāḥ) always (sadā) inclined to one Hara (hara-eka-pravaṇāḥ), — to these abodes of bliss (saubhāgya-sadmanām)||20.3||


क्रीडितं तव महेश्वरतायाः पृष्ठतोऽन्यदिदमेव यथैतत्।
Krīḍitaṁ tava maheśvaratāyāḥ pṛṣṭhato'nyadidameva yathaitat|
इष्टमात्रघटितेष्ववदानेष्वात्मना परमुपायमुपैमि॥२०.४॥
Iṣṭamātraghaṭiteṣvavadāneṣvātmanā paramupāyamupaimi||20.4||

This (idam) play (krīḍitam) of Your (tava) lordship (maheśvara-tāyāḥ)such is this (yathā etat), and everything else (anyat) behind it (pṛṣṭhataḥ). In deeds that are accomplished by mere desire (iṣṭa-mātra-ghaṭiteṣu avadāneṣu), I myself (ātmanā) attain (upaimi) the highest (param) means (upāyam)||20.4||


त्वद्धाम्नि विश्ववन्द्येऽस्मिन्नियति क्रीडने सति।
Tvaddhāmni viśvavandye'sminniyati krīḍane sati|
तव नाथ कियान्भूयान्नानन्दरससम्भवः॥२०.५॥
Tava nātha kiyānbhūyānnānandarasasambhavaḥ||20.5||

Lord (nātha), when (sati) in this (asmin) Thy abode (tvat-dhāmni), honoured by the whole universe (viśva-vandye), there takes place (krīḍane) such a (iyati) play — how great (kiyān) indeed (bhūyān) is Thine (tava) surge of the juice of bliss (ānanda-rasa-sambhavaḥ)!||20.5||


कथं स सुभगो मा भूद्यो गौर्या वल्लभो हरः।
Kathaṁ sa subhago mā bhūdyo gauryā vallabho haraḥ|
हरोऽपि मा भूदथ किं गौर्याः परमवल्लभः॥२०.६॥
Haro'pi mā bhūdatha kiṁ gauryāḥ paramavallabhaḥ||20.6||

How then (katham) not (mā bhūt) be happy (subhagaḥ) he (saḥ), who (yaḥ)Hara (haraḥ), the beloved (vallabhaḥ) Gaurī (gauryāḥ)? And (atha) how (kim) Hara (haraḥ) not (mā bhūt) be the supreme beloved (parama-vallabhaḥ) Gaurī (gauryāḥ)?||20.6||


ध्यानामृतमयं यस्य स्वात्ममूलमनश्वरम्।
Dhyānāmṛtamayaṁ yasya svātmamūlamanaśvaram|
संविल्लतास्तथारूपास्तस्य कस्यापि सत्तरोः॥२०.७॥
Saṁvillatāstathārūpāstasya kasyāpi sattaroḥ||20.7||

Of that (tasya) certain (kasya api) good tree (sat-taroḥ), whose root is one’s own self (sva-ātma-mūlam), imperishable (anaśvaram), consisting of the nectar of contemplation (dhyāna-amṛta-mayam), — and the vines of consciousness (saṁvid-latāḥ) are likewise (tathā-rūpāḥ)||20.7||


भक्तिकण्डूसमुल्लासावसरे परमेश्वर।
Bhaktikaṇḍūsamullāsāvasare parameśvara|
महानिकषपाषाणस्थूणा पूजैव जायते॥२०.८॥
Mahānikaṣapāṣāṇasthūṇā pūjaiva jāyate||20.8||

The Supreme Lord (parama-īśvara), at the hour when the itch of devotion playfully arises (bhakti-kaṇḍū-samullāsa-avasare), worship itself (pūjā eva) is born (jāyate) as a pillar of the great touchstone (mahā-nikaṣa-pāṣāṇa-sthūṇā)||20.8||


सदा स्र्ष्टिविनोदाय सदा स्थितिसुखासिने।
Sadā srṣṭivinodāya sadā sthitisukhāsine|
सदा त्रिभुवनाहारतृप्ताय स्वामिने नमः॥२०.९॥
Sadā tribhuvanāhāratṛptāya svāmine namaḥ||20.9||

Homage (namaḥ) to the Lord (svāmine), who eternally (sadā) delights in creation (sṛṣṭi-vinodāya), eternally (sadā) sits in the bliss of abiding (sthiti-sukha-āsine), eternally (sadā) satisfied with the food of the three worlds (tri-bhuvana-āhāra-tṛptāya)||20.9||


न क्वापि गत्वा हित्वापि न किञ्चिदिदमेव ये।
Na kvāpi gatvā hitvāpi na kiñcididameva ye|
भव्यं त्वद्धाम पश्यन्ति भव्यास्तेभ्यो नमो नमः॥२०.१०॥
Bhavyaṁ tvaddhāma paśyanti bhavyāstebhyo namo namaḥ||20.10||

Bow (namaḥ), bow (namaḥ) theme (tebhyaḥ) auspicious (bhavyāḥ), who (ye), nowhere (na kvāpi) without leaving (gatvā) and (api) nothing (na kiñcid) without leaving (hitvā), sees (paśyanti) this very one (idameva) auspicious (bhavyam) Your abode (tvat-dhāma)||20.10||


भक्तिलक्ष्मीसमृद्धानां किमन्यदुपयाचितम्।
Bhaktilakṣmīsamṛddhānāṁ kimanyadupayācitam|
एतया वा दरिद्रणां किमन्यदुपयाचितम्॥२०.११॥
Etayā vā daridraṇāṁ kimanyadupayācitam||20.11||

What else (kimanyat) could be begged (upayācitam) by those who are rich in the Śrī of devotion (bhakti-lakṣmī-samṛddhānām)? And () what else (kimanyat) could be begged (upayācitam) by those who are poor in it (etayā) destitute (daridrāṇām)?||20.11||


दुःखान्यपि सुखायन्ते विषमप्यमृतायते।
Duḥkhānyapi sukhāyante viṣamapyamṛtāyate|
मोक्षायते च संसारो यत्र मार्गः स शङ्करः॥२०.१२॥
Mokṣāyate ca saṁsāro yatra mārgaḥ sa śaṅkaraḥ||20.12||

Where (yatra) and sorrows (duḥkhāni api) become happiness (sukhāyante), and poison (viṣam api)nectar (amṛtāyate), and (ca) the cycle of existence (saṁsāraḥ)liberation (mokṣāyate), — that one (saḥ) path (mārgaḥ) and is Śaṅkara (śaṅkaraḥ)||20.12||


मूले मध्येऽवसाने च नास्ति दुःखं भवज्जुषां।
Mūle madhye'vasāne ca nāsti duḥkhaṁ bhavajjuṣāṁ|
तथापि वयमीशान सीदामः कथमुच्यताम्॥२०.१३॥
Tathāpi vayamīśāna sīdāmaḥ kathamucyatām||20.13||

For those devoted to You (bhavat-juṣām) there is (na asti) no sorrow (duḥkham) neither at the beginning (mūle), nor (ca) in the middle (madhye), nor at the end (avasāne). And yet (tathā api), O Lord (īśāna), we (vayam) languish (sīdāmaḥ). Let it be said (ucyatām), how this (katham)||20.13||


ज्ञानयोगादिनान्येषामप्यपेक्षितुमर्हति।
Jñānayogādinānyeṣāmapyapekṣitumarhati|
प्रकाशः स्वैरिणामिव भवान्भक्तिमतां प्रभो॥२०.१४॥
Prakāśaḥ svairiṇāmiva bhavānbhaktimatāṁ prabho||20.14||

O Lord (prabho), Thou (bhavān), the Light (prakāśaḥ) of the devoted (bhakti-matām), needest (na) not (apekṣitum arhati) another (anyeṣām)in knowledge, yoga, and the like (jñāna-yoga-ādinā), — as (iva) wanton women (svairiṇām)||20.14||


भक्तानां नार्तयो नाप्यस्त्याध्यानं स्वात्मनस्तव।
Bhaktānāṁ nārtayo nāpyastyādhyānaṁ svātmanastava|
तथाप्यस्ति शिवेत्येतत्किमप्येषां बहिर्मुखे॥२०.१५॥
Tathāpyasti śivetyetatkimapyeṣāṁ bahirmukhe||20.15||

For devotees (bhaktānām) there is no (na) affliction (ārtayaḥ), nor (na api) contemplation (ādhyānam) of their own self (sva-ātmanaḥ)of Thee (tava). And yet (tathā api) there is (asti) in them (eṣām) something (kimapi) turned outward (bahiḥ-mukhe): this very thing (etat) — “Śiva!” (śiva iti)||20.15||


सर्वाभासावभासो यो विमर्शवलितोऽखिलम्।
Sarvābhāsāvabhāso yo vimarśavalito'khilam|
अहमेतदिति स्तौमि तां क्रियाशक्तिमीश ते॥२०.१६॥
Ahametaditi staumi tāṁ kriyāśaktimīśa te||20.16||

The Lord (īśa), I praise (staumi) that (tām) Your (te) Power of Action (kriyā-śaktim), which (yaḥ) is the light of all phenomena (sarva-ābhāsa-avabhāsaḥ), enveloped by the echo (vimarśa-valitaḥ): “All (akhilam) this (etat)I (aham)”||20.16||


वर्तन्ते जन्तवोऽशेषा अपि ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्णवः।
Vartante jantavo'śeṣā api brahmendraviṣṇavaḥ|
ग्रसमानास्ततो वन्दे देव विश्वं भवन्मयम्॥२०.१७॥
Grasamānāstato vande deva viśvaṁ bhavanmayam||20.17||

O God (deva), all (aśeṣāḥ) creatures (jantavaḥ)and (api) Brahma, Indra and Viṣṇu (brahma-indra-viṣṇavaḥ)live (vartante), devouring (grasamānāḥ). Therefore (tataḥ) I praise (vande) the universe (viśvam), consisting of You (bhavat-mayam)||20.17||


सतो विनाशसम्बन्धान्मत्परं निखिलं मृषा।
Sato vināśasambandhānmatparaṁ nikhilaṁ mṛṣā|
एवमेवोद्यते नाथ त्वया संहारलीलया॥२०.१८॥
Evamevodyate nātha tvayā saṁhāralīlayā||20.18||

Therefore (yat) that the existent (sataḥ) is bound to destruction (vināśa-sambandhāt), — everything (nikhilam) except me (mat-param) is false (mṛṣā). Just so (evameva), Lord (nātha), Thou (tvayā) dost proclaim (udyate) through the play of withdrawal (saṁhāra-līlayā)||20.18||


ध्यातमात्मुपतिष्ठत एव त्वद्वपुर्वरद भक्तिधनानाम्।
Dhyātamātmupatiṣṭhata eva tvadvapurvarada bhaktidhanānām|
अप्यचिन्त्यमखिलाद्भुतचिन्ताकर्तृतां प्रति च ते विजयन्ते॥२०.१९॥
Apyacintyamakhilādbhutacintākartṛtāṁ prati ca te vijayante||20.19||

Giver of gifts (varada), Your (tvat) body (vapuḥ) appears (upatiṣṭhate) to those whose wealth is devotion (bhakti-dhanānām), from mere contemplation (dhyāta-mātram). And (api) inconceivable (acintyam) Your (te) deeds triumph (vijayante) — in regard to being the maker of every wondrous thought (akhila-adbhuta-cintā-kartṛtām prati)||20.19||


तावकभक्तिरसासवसेकादिव सुखितमर्ममण्डलस्फुरितैः।
Tāvakabhaktirasāsavasekādiva sukhitamarmamaṇḍalasphuritaiḥ|
नृत्यति वीरजनो निशि वेतालकुलैः कृतोत्साहः॥२०.२०॥
Nṛtyati vīrajano niśi vetālakulaiḥ kṛtotsāhaḥ||20.20||

As if (iva) from the sprinkling of the intoxicating juice of devotion to Thee (tāvaka-bhakti-rasa-āsava-sekāt), the host of heroes (vīra-janaḥ), whose happy knots of the body have quivered (sukhita-marma-maṇḍala-sphuritaiḥ), dances (nṛtyati) by night (niśi), inspired (kṛta-utsāhaḥ) by the hosts of vetālas (vetāla-kulaiḥ)||20.20||


आरब्धा भवदभिनुतिरमुना येनाङ्गकेन मम शम्भो।
Ārabdhā bhavadabhinutiramunā yenāṅgakena mama śambho|
तेनापर्यन्तमिमं कालं दृढमखिलमेव भविषीष्ट॥२०.२१॥
Tenāparyantamimaṁ kālaṁ dṛḍhamakhilameva bhaviṣīṣṭa||20.21||

Śambhu (śambho), by that (tena) my (mama) body (aṅgakena), by which (yena) begun (ārabdhā) this (amunā) praise of You (bhavat-abhinutiḥ), — may I be (bhaviṣīṣṭa) this (imam) time (kālam) endless (aparyantam), firmly (dṛḍham) and entirely (akhilam eva)||20.21||
