Uneven and semi-even meters

/ Such, O best of brahmins, are the even meters, which I have set forth earlier. Now hear about the uneven and half-even meters.

/ Meters in which the feet belong to different metrical types and are not similar to each other are called uneven (viṣama).

-118/ Meters in which two alternating feet are similar, while two adjacent feet are not similar to each other, are called half-even (ardhasama).

/ An even meter is defined by the definition of one of its feet, whereas an uneven meter requires the definition of all its feet.

/ In half-even meters, odd feet do not contain the gaṇa “ja”, while even feet may vary.

Pathya

-122/ Patya – Anuṣṭubh class meter: the feet use the gaṇas sa, sa, ga, ga and sa, ra, la, ga.

-124/ Uneven Pāṭhya – a fully uneven variety: each foot uses a different combination of gaṇas.

-126/ Inverted Pāṭhya – the second and fourth feet are inverted: the characteristics are swapped compared to the first and third feet.

-128/ Chapala – eight syllables in each foot: the fourth, fifth, and sixth syllables are short.

-131/ Vipulā – eight syllables in each foot: the seventh syllable is short in certain feet.

-135/ Vaktra – eight syllables in each foot: three heavy syllables at the end.

-138/ Ketumatī – four-foot meter: the feet consist of the gaṇas sa, ja, sa, ga and bha, ra, na, ga, ga.

-140/ Udgata – a four-foot metre: the feet contain the gaṇas sa, ja, sa, la; na, sa, ja, ga; bha, na, ja, la, ga; sa, ja, sa, ja, ga.

-142/ Lalita – a four-foot metre: the feet contain the gaṇas sa, ja, sa, la; na, sa, ja, ga; na, na, sa, sa; sa, ja, sa, ja, ga.

-144/ Aparavaktra – a four-foot metre: odd feet – na, na, ra, la, ga; even feet – na, ja, ja, ra.

-146/ Puṣpitagrā – a four-foot metre: odd feet – na, na, ra, ya; even feet – na, ja, ja, ra, ga.

-148/ Vanavāsika – gāthā in sixteen mātrās, divided into four sections using gaṇas and partial triads.

The sizes of the Āryā type

/ Thus have I briefly set forth the definitions of the various syllabic meters. Next, I shall give the definitions of the meters of the Āryā type.

/ Ārya is of five kinds: Pathya, Vipulā, Chapalā, Mukha-chapalā and Jaghana-chapalā.

-159/ General structure of the Āryā: gaṇas of four mātrās; the second and fourth feet are even; the first and third – are odd; the eighth gaṇa – is “half” (two mātrās); for the sixth gaṇa variants are possible: “ja” or four short syllables; the placement of the caesura follows certain rules.

-161/ Pathya-Āryā: caesura after three gaṇas; twelve mātrās in odd feet.

-163/ Vipula-Āryā: without caesura; odd gaṇas with long syllables; even gaṇas – long in the middle.

-165/ Chapala-Āryā: the even gaṇas (second, fourth) consist of the type “ja”.

-167/ Mukha-capala-Āryā: the definition of capala applies only to the first half-verse.

/ Jaghana-capala-Āryā: the definition of Capala applies only to the second half-verse.

/ Sarvatash-capala-Ārya: the signs of Capala are visible in both half-verses.

-171/ The total number of mātṛs: the first half-verse – thirty; the second half-verse – twenty-seven.
